DELHI :IGNOU will set up centres in abroad

IGNOU ( Indira Gandhi National Open University ) has plans to set up centres in foreign countries in the near future. The university has already been running its courses in countries like the UK, Germany and other African countries for some time now. However, these courses were so long offered in collaboration with institutes of respective countries. But looking at the increasing demand, Ignou has decided to set up its own centres in these countries.
“People in developed countries are eager to learn about Indian history, culture, art, dance and so on. So we will be offering certificate courses in these subjects,” said V N Rajsekharan Pillai, vice-chancellor, Ignou. The university, to this effect, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK-based Lincoln University. “We will be setting up the first centre in the UK, which will be offering courses in history and Indian performing arts in collaboration with Lincoln University,” he added.
At present, Ignou offers its courses in 39 different countries. “In African countries there is much demand for courses in management, rural development, NGO management and leadership development programmes,” Pillai said. But are programmes developed in the Indian context relevant in other countries? “That has been taken care of. We keep the basic modules same, but we exclude the Indian case studies. Instead, with the help of institutes of that particular country, we incorporate their case studies to contextualise them,” said Pillai.
Recently, there was a conference in Malaysia in which vice-chancellors from Commonwealth countries participated. “It was during the conference that many countries from Africa like Eritrea, Nigeria expressed interest in our programmes,” He said.

Indian Institutes Of Management (IIM)

Among the prestigious educational institutes of India that have captured the imagination of students and scholars alike, Indian Institutes of Management or IIMs, as they are known, are prominent. With its practical approach, modern facilities and well-qualified experienced faculties, an IIM can provide quality management education in India that can be compared with the best business schools of the world.
The Seven different IIMs in India are:-
IIM Ahmedabad (Gujarat), :-In1961, IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) was started as an autonomous institute in collaboration with the State and central government.
IIM Bangalore (Karnataka):-IIM Bangalore was started in 1973 to cater to the rising demand for managing the technical uprising in the country.
IIM Calcutta (West Bengal):- In November 1961, in association with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Ford Institute and the government of West Bengal; IIM Calcutta (IIMC) was set up.
IIM Indore(Madhya Pradesh) :-Indian institute of Management, Indore (IIMI) was established a decade ago.
IIM Kozhikode(Kerala):-The fifth Indian Institute of Management was established in Kozhikode (IIMK) under the guidance laid down by the government of India and the state government of Kerela.
IIM Lucknow(Uttar Pradesh):- IIM, Lucknow (IIML) was started on a modest footing back in 1981.
IIM Shillong (Meghalaya):- The seventh Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong started its first academic session on July 4, 2008.
But all the Seven IIMs enjoy the similar status in the world academic platform irrespective of their age. The Seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have also made their position in the elite group of institutions like the IITs, NITs, and Research Institutions like ISRO, CSIR, ICAR etc.
To tap the best talent in the country and to train them to be excellent, IIMs take the route of Common Admission Test (CAT). The test takes place annually across the country in which lakhs of aspirants try their skills. The students shortlisted by them are given such sort of training that wherever they go they leave an impact. The manpower mended in IIMs deliver excellent leadership to the society.
The rigorous training imparted by IIMs to their students through out the whole working session bear fruit too. At the end of the session, companies from across the globe come to their campus and offer hefty pay-packets. This is not all. Universities and Institutes of different countries are always keen to have a tie-up or academic collaboration with IIMs. Big industry giants too take pride in collaborating with them for providing training programmes to cater to the industry needs.

Delhi : IT BHU soon to become IIT

Delhi : Now IT BHU soon to become IIT
New Delhi: The Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT BHU) will soon join the league of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has decided to convert IT BHU into an IIT. The decision was conveyed in the Lok Sabha on Monday by D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for HRD.
The decision was conveyed when she replied to a question on whether the government has taken any steps in developing technology institutions across the country on the lines of IITs. For a long time, IT BHU had been in a process of upgrading itself into an IIT
The admission process for students is already being done through the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE).
As per S.N. Upadhyaya, Director, IT BHU, "The IIT status will not only improve the infrastructure and academics of the institute but will also get better students and attract bright faculties". "With more academic freedom, the institute will be able to introduce inter-disciplinary courses that were not possible earlier as we were tied up with the rules and regulations of the university, to go through various councils to get a new academic programme passed. But the status of IIT will enable us to introduce new courses without these limitations" he added. "Appointing faculties will also become much easier," he avers. Seven other institutes comprising of Bengal Engineering College; Howrah, Cochin University of Science and Technology; Kochi, Engineering and Technology Department of Jadavpur University and Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology; Aligarh Muslim University apart from IT BHU are being considered to become a part of the IIT brigade.

Delhi : IGNOU links MoU with IBM India to reform IT education

Delhi : IGNOU links MoU with IBM India to reform IT education
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), The Advanced Center for Informatics and Innovative Learning (ACIIL) and IBM India have signed an MoU that would re-invent IT education in the country.
As a part of the MoU, IGNOU and IBM India would partner each other skills to students on IT standards in emerging verticals like healthcare, financial services and retail that have a significant growth potential, in addition to providing open source software skills and open standards, with live projects.
The three programs that will be offered in the first phase under this MoU would include: A Certificate in Open Source Software, Diploma in Open Source Software and Industry Vertical Domain Open Standards and Advanced Diploma in Industry Vertical Domain Open Standards (Healthcare/ Retail/ Insurance).
The Innovation Centre for Open Standards (iCos), an online platform, will be the underlying framework for the engagement between the IBM and the IGNOU for the execution of the courses. The IBM iCos platform links students’ project based learning with IT industry and mentors. This will be seamlessly integrated to IGNOU’s in house developed Unified Learning Platform in due course.
This effort will fill up the finishing school efforts of the IT Industry today, enabling the day one deployment. The students will immensely benefit from the flexibility of learning at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and make the students future-ready.
Speaking on this, Professor Srivathsan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IGNOU said, “The MoU aptly fits into IGNOU’s vision of democratizing the education and offering quality education to all. It opens up the modernization of IT and Computer Science education as well as their applications in different verticals. Students stand to benefit immensely from this initiative as it provides them a platform to help them transition from academia to industry while they are still on campus”.
The IBM will work with universities and colleges that support open standards and seek to use open source and IBM technologies for teaching purposes both directly and virtually via the web.

University of Delhi

The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. Only three colleges existed then in Delhi: St. Stephens College founded in 1881, Hindu College founded in 1899 and Ramjas College founded in 1917, which were affiliated to the University. The University thus had a modest beginning with just three colleges, two faculties (Arts and Science) and about 750 students. In October 1933, the University offices and the Library shifted to the Viceregal Lodge Estate, and till today this site is the nucleus of the University (Main Campus). Apart from central administrative offices, examination offices and the sports complex, the main departments of the Faculty of Science are housed in the Viceregal Lodge Estate.Sir Maurice Gwyer, who was the then Vice Chancellor, realizing the importance of a distinguished faculty, searched for talent all over the country and brought men of eminence to this University, such as Prof. D S Kothari in Physics, Prof. T R Sheshadri in Chemistry, Prof. P Maheshwari in Botany and Prof. M L Bhatia in Zoology. Over the last even decades the University has grown into one of the largest universities in India. At present, there are 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges spread all over the city, with about 2,20,000 students. In an effort to cope with this enormous expansion, the University in the early seventies initiated a new organizational pattern based on the multi-campus concept. The South Campus made a beginning in 1973 by starting postgraduate programmes in some departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in a rented building. The campus acquired land near Dhaula Kuan where the building of Arts Faculty was first constructed. Offices and teaching activities shifted to this campus in 1983. A beginning has been made towards establishing the East and West Campuses of the University. The East Campus is being developed with the University College of Medical Science as its nucleus, while the West Campus will have as its focus on Engineering and Technology. When the University Grants Commission started establishing Centres of Advanced Studies in the country, 6 were awarded to the University of Delhi out of a total of 18 such centres in the early sixties. These were in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Sociology. These Centres of Advanced Studies are now the centres of excellence in teaching and research in their respective areas. In addition, a number of these and other University departments received grants under the Special Assistance Programme of the UGC in recognition of their outstanding academic work. The University has 15 libraries. These are in addition to Libraries in the Colleges. The University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) has a number of sophisticated research instruments which are used by several departments of the University and by other institutions in Delhi and its the neighbourhood. The University has just completed the implementation of fibre-optic networks on the North and South Campuses.
